Charity Curry Night

In aid of The Friends of Court Farm - Garden Archaeology project

Hi

On the chilli winter night of 5thFebruary 2014 the Friends of Court Farm enjoyed a delicious selection of hot curries at the Masala Indian Restaurant in West End, Llanelli. The evening was held to raise much-needed money which will help towards the maintenance, preservation and development of Court.

In all around 80 people were welcomed warmly by our esteemed Chairman, Dominic Conway who thanked everyone for coming and making the evening such a success. He also thanked the Masala for the opportunity they had afforded to the Friends in their fundraising endeavours.

Every one enjoyed the buffet – the choice and quality of food was exceptional. A raffle was held which further increased the takings on the night and a big thank you is extended to all those who donated prizes.

After this enjoyable evening in February we are having another curry night in the Massala restaurant in aid of the garden project.

 The garden at Court Farm

The physical remains can be divided into three main areas:

¨ the walled compartment to the south-east of the house
Given its location, structure and relict planting it is likely that this compartment had at least a partial ornamental, garden function in the past

¨ The terrace to the south of the house
To the south of the west end of the house is a rectangular terrace

¨ The former orchard area to the north-west  of the house
is planted with fruit trees, now old and very decrepit, and also with hornbeam that might originally have formed a hedge

Following an inspection by CADW's inspector of historic gardens, the conclusion was
"the physical remains of compartments and terracing around the house suggest that some, or all of the area played a role, in part at least, as an ornamental garden"

There needs to be an investigation, both archival and archaeological, to ascertain if :-

  • there  are any remains of internal layout, such as paths, flowerbeds, walling?
  • how are the terraced areas bounded What significant planting remains (trees, including the fruit trees) and what is its state of health?
  • is there any evidence for further planting in the past
  • of what character, and where, were the original entrances?

It is the intention of the Friends to pursue  funding in order to find the answer to these questions.

An Awards for All grant has been awarded to start the project, we are now seeking to fund investigative archaeology, starting with Ground Penetrating Radar to ascertain what evidence is left underground - -so come and join us, enjoy a meal and contribute to the success of this phase of the project.
